Strawberry Planting

Posted by admin on May 16, 2010

So how do you plant strawberry plants for the best result?

Strawberry planting is actually not that hard. For the best growth strawberry plants need to be planted in well drained soil that you have amended with organic matter. Strawberries should not be planted near or in soil where you have had peppers, eggplants, raspberries, potatoes, or tomatoes growing in the past 3 to 5 years because strawberries are susceptible to verticillium wilt. In generally it is also advised that you move your strawberry beds if verticillium wilt appears. If your soil has a high lime content it may not be suitable for strawberry planting.

During the winter time you have to protect your strawberry plants against the freezing. This can be achieved by mulching you plants and if possible planting strawberries at top of a gentle slope as it helps minimize damage to the strawberry plants. After frost you have to inspect you plants to see if any of them have been lifted out of the soil. If you find any, you can simply push them back into the soil and cover with dirt, but do it gently.

Strawberry planting needs to be done in rows for hills in an area where the sun shines at least 6 hours a day for the best result. The strawberry plants has to be planted 15 to 18 inches apart in rows that needs to be about 2 feet apart. If you plan on planting bare root strawberries, you have to trim the roots to be about six inches long.

When planting you have to dig holes that are deep enough to conceal the roots. After putting you strawberry plant inside the hole, put enough dirt in to hole be able to have the strawberry plant sit on the dirt with the roots evenly spread in hole. The plants base of the crown should be at the soil level. If the crown sits to high above soil level, the strawberry plant will simply dry out. After planting smooth and water the soil to settle it. If the strawberry plants experience a drought just after planting, it may reduce the growth of your plant and it might even survive. It is therefore crucial to water your plants after strawberry planting.
